About Me
I was born in Strasbourg, France, and for as long as I can remember, I’ve enjoyed creating images. As a child I spent countless hours drawing but to my disappointment, there were no art lessons available at my school. Instead, I doodled in the margins of my school books and drew in my spare time, on all sort of media including the walls at home!
From Applied Arts and teaching to illustrating children’s books
Without any art training, I opted to study history at Strasbourg University. Fortunately for me, the History Department shared its building with the Art Department, and after a year I chose to switch subjects - the best decision I ever made. I studied there for four more years, specialising in applied arts before taking an art teaching qualification. My first teaching job was at a sixth form college in Burgundy, which was a rewarding and inspiring experience, but I continued to develop my own art portfolio, and I knew that longer term I’d like to be a full time illustrator. When I finally made the leap and left teaching, I had a whole new set of challenges, to develop my illustration styles, working with clients, for magazines and books.
Commissions and techniques
Over the years I have been fortunate to work on a huge variety of commissions with distinguished editors, designers and authors, including Allan Ahlberg, Julia Donaldson and Sam McBratney. I enjoy using a wide range of techniques and styles, from traditional watercolour and acrylic painting to ink drawings and digital media. My studio is now piled high with the results - board books, non-fiction titles and children’s picture books.
